Oral Cancer Screening in Gonzales, TX

Three Minutes That Can Change Everything

Oral cancer is diagnosed in more than 54,000 Americans every year. When it's detected early — at stage one or two — the five-year survival rate exceeds 80%. When it's caught late, that number drops to below 40%. The difference between those two outcomes is often a thorough screening performed at a routine dental appointment.

What Sets Our Oral Cancer Screening Apart

Standard care, not an add-on:

  • Included at every exam visit for every patient — no exceptions, no extra charge
  • Three doctors who know your baseline — changes over time are easier to identify when we know what's normal for you
  • Full visual and tactile screening of lips, tongue, floor of mouth, throat, and soft tissue
  • Early detection dramatically improves outcomes — stage one survival rate exceeds 80%
  • Most oral cancers are first found during a routine dental exam — keeping your appointments is one of the most important things you can do

What the Oral Cancer Screening Involves

Three minutes, completely painless:

An oral cancer screening takes approximately three minutes and is completely painless. During your exam, your doctor visually and manually examines:

  • Lips — outer and inner surfaces
  • Tongue — top, underside, and sides
  • Floor of the mouth
  • Roof of the mouth — hard and soft palate
  • Inside of the cheeks
  • Throat and tonsil area
  • Lymph nodes — along the jaw and neck

We're looking for any asymmetry, discoloration, lumps, sores, or tissue changes that don't look or feel right. Most findings are completely benign. When something warrants a closer look, we tell you immediately, explain what we've found, and coordinate whatever follow-up is appropriate — typically a biopsy referral or a monitoring visit in two to four weeks depending on the finding.

Who Is at Risk

Oral cancer can develop in anyone:

Oral cancer can develop in anyone, but certain factors increase risk meaningfully:

  • Tobacco use in any form — cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, and vaping
  • Heavy or regular alcohol consumption
  • HPV exposure — particularly HPV-16, now the leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers in the United States
  • Prolonged sun exposure — affecting the lips
  • Age — risk increases significantly after 40, though HPV-related cancers are appearing in younger patients

It is important to note that a significant number of oral cancer patients have no traditional risk factors at all. This is precisely why we screen everyone, at every visit, regardless of history or perceived risk level.

What Happens If Something Is Found

A finding does not mean cancer:

Finding something during a screening does not mean you have cancer. The vast majority of findings — canker sores, minor irritations, tissue variations — are completely benign. What it means is that we've identified something worth monitoring or investigating.

If we find a lesion or tissue change that warrants follow-up, we'll explain exactly what we've found and what we recommend. In some cases that means asking you to return in a few weeks to see if it has resolved on its own. In other cases we'll refer you to an oral surgeon or ENT for a biopsy. We coordinate that referral directly and follow up with you throughout the process. You won't be navigating it alone.

The Single Most Important Thing You Can Do

Keep your appointments:

Keep your appointments. It sounds simple, and it is — but it's the single most powerful thing a patient can do to ensure that if oral cancer does develop, it's found at a stage where the outcomes are dramatically better. We see patients who have been coming in every six months for decades and patients who haven't been in years. The difference in what we find — and what we can do about it — is significant.

Oral cancer screening is one of those things that takes almost no time but carries enormous weight. I take it seriously at every appointment because I've seen firsthand what early detection means for a patient's outcome.
