Root Canal Treatment in Gonzales, TX

Saving Your Natural Tooth Is Always Worth It

Root canals have an undeserved reputation, and it has been responsible for a lot of unnecessary suffering. People endure infected teeth — with the deep, throbbing, relentless pain of a tooth abscess — because they are afraid of the treatment that would relieve it. That is a genuine tragedy, and we want to address it directly.

Why Patients Trust Us with Root Canal Treatments

Your comfort matters as much as the clinical outcome:

  • We do not proceed until you are adequately numbed and comfortable — full stop
  • Experienced dentists, one private practice — Dr. Weinman with 35+ years of restorative expertise and Dr. Leon-Weinman with advanced residency training in complex care
  • CEREC same-day crown often placed at closely scheduled follow-up — minimizing total appointments
  • Calm, unhurried technique — no rushing through a procedure that rewards precision
  • Most patients return to normal activity the following day

The root canal's reputation comes from decades ago, when anesthesia was less reliable and instruments were less precise.

That reputation is not accurate today.

What a Root Canal Actually Is

The solution, not the problem:

Inside every tooth is a soft inner chamber — the pulp — containing nerves and blood vessels. This tissue is essential while the tooth is developing. Once the tooth is fully formed, it can survive without it.

When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed — from deep decay reaching the inner chamber, a crack allowing bacterial access, or repeated trauma to the tooth — it causes pain and, if untreated, can progress to an abscess. A dental abscess is a bacterial infection that can spread to the jaw, the neck, and in serious cases further. It is a genuine medical concern.

A root canal treatment removes the infected pulp tissue, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them against reinfection. The tooth itself remains — still anchored in the bone, still stimulating the surrounding jaw structure, still holding its neighbors in position. Restored with a crown, a root canal-treated tooth routinely functions for 20 years or more. The tooth survives. The pain is gone. The root canal was the solution, not the problem.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Don't wait if you're experiencing these:

  • Severe, persistent toothache — particularly throbbing, waking you at night, or intensifying with pressure
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold — that lingers long after the stimulus is removed
  • A tooth that has darkened noticeably — compared to its neighbors
  • Swelling, tenderness, or a visible bump — on the gum near a specific tooth
  • Pain when biting or chewing — on one side
  • Sometimes no symptoms at all — identified only on a routine X-ray

If you're experiencing any of the active symptoms above, please don't wait. Call us. The sooner an infected tooth is treated, the more options we have.

What the Procedure Actually Feels Like

Manageable, not miserable:

We administer local anesthesia before beginning — the same used for a filling or crown preparation. Once the area is thoroughly numb, you will feel pressure during the procedure but no pain. If at any point you feel discomfort beyond pressure, tell us and we will stop and address it. We do not proceed with a patient who is not adequately anesthetized.

Most root canal appointments take between one and two hours. After the procedure, mild soreness is normal for a few days and responds well to over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients are back to normal activity the following day.

After the Root Canal: The Crown

Protecting the tooth long-term:

A tooth that has had a root canal no longer has a blood supply, making the remaining structure more brittle and prone to fracture under chewing forces. For most teeth — particularly back teeth — we strongly recommend a crown afterward to protect the tooth long-term. With our CEREC technology, that crown can often be placed at a closely scheduled follow-up, minimizing total appointments in your treatment sequence.

The patients who were most afraid of their root canal are almost always the ones who look at me afterward and say 'that was nothing like what I expected.' I never get tired of hearing that.
