Periodontal Care in Gonzales, TX

Your Gums Are the Foundation. We Protect Them.

If someone told you that nearly half of American adults have an active bacterial infection in their mouths right now — most of them without realizing it — you'd probably want to make sure you weren't one of them. That's the reality of periodontal disease. It's common, largely silent in its early stages, and its consequences extend well beyond your mouth.

New Patients Always Welcome  •  Most Insurance Accepted  •  Flexible Scheduling Available

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Research has linked it to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, complications with diabetes management, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The infection doesn't stay contained to the mouth — it circulates. And the longer it goes untreated, the more damage it does to the bone and connective tissue that hold your teeth in place. At Smiles of Gonzales, we screen for periodontal disease at every single visit and provide cleanings and maintenance for patients with periodontal disease.

Bleeding when you brush isn't normal.

It's your gums asking for help.

The good news? Caught early, this is very fixable.

More Than a Deep Cleaning — What Sets Our Periodontal Care Apart

  • Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) performed in Gonzales
  • Gingival grafts performed in Gonzales — most general practices refer these out entirely
  • Odyssey Diode LASER for less invasive, more precise periodontal treatment
  • In-office periodontist available at our flagship Seguin location for comprehensive surgical cases
  • Every patient screened for periodontal disease at every visit — catching it early is everything

The Stages of Periodontal Disease — and Why Early Detection Matters

Gingivitis

The earliest stage, gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue caused by bacterial buildup at and below the gumline. Signs include gums that appear red or puffy and bleeding when you brush or floss — which is never normal, despite how common it is. Critically, at this stage the damage is entirely reversible. A thorough professional cleaning and improved home care resolves gingivitis completely. No permanent bone loss. Nothing that can't be undone.

Periodontitis

When gingivitis goes untreated, the infection progresses below the gumline into the structures supporting the teeth. Pockets form between the teeth and the gums, harboring bacteria that are inaccessible to normal brushing. Bone loss begins. Teeth may become sensitive, mobile, or appear longer as gums recede. Periodontitis is not reversible the way gingivitis is — but progression absolutely can be halted with proper treatment, and stability maintained with appropriate ongoing care.

How We Treat Periodontal Disease in Gonzales

Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

The cornerstone of non-surgical periodontal treatment, and a service we provide right here in Gonzales. Scaling removes bacterial deposits from below the gumline — in the pockets where a standard cleaning cannot reach. Root planing smooths the root surfaces to discourage bacterial reattachment. Done with local anesthesia, typically in two appointments covering half the mouth each time, with a follow-up evaluation to assess the response. Most patients with early to moderate periodontitis respond very well.

Laser-Assisted Periodontal Treatment

For patients with more advanced disease, our Odyssey Diode LASER targets infected tissue with an accuracy that instruments alone can't match. The laser energy destroys the bacteria in the pocket while leaving healthy tissue intact — less bleeding, faster healing, no sutures in most cases. Not appropriate for every patient or every pocket, but for the right cases it represents a meaningful advance over traditional deep cleaning alone.

Gingival Grafts

For patients with significant gum recession — where the root surface is exposed, causing sensitivity and increasing decay risk — gingival grafting restores the gum tissue to a healthy, protective position. We perform gingival grafts here in our Gonzales office. This is a procedure that most general dental practices refer out entirely; our ability to perform it in-house means your care stays coordinated and your recovery is managed by the team that knows you.

Comprehensive Periodontal Surgery

For cases that require more extensive surgical intervention, we coordinate care with the in-office periodontist at our flagship location in Seguin. This ensures you have access to specialist-level periodontal surgery without leaving the practice family — your records travel with you, and your follow-up care continues here in Gonzales.

Periodontal Maintenance

Once active disease has been treated, the work shifts to prevention of recurrence. Periodontal maintenance appointments — typically every three to four months — keep bacterial levels low, monitor pocket depths for any signs of reactivation, and allow us to intervene early if the disease begins to progress again. This is not optional if you want to keep your teeth. Patients who complete active treatment and then return to a once-a-year schedule consistently see disease reactivation. We'll be direct about this because it matters.

Healthy gums are the foundation of everything else. You can have the most beautifully restored smile in the world, but if the gum and bone beneath it aren't healthy, nothing built on top of it will last. That's why I treat periodontal health as seriously as any other aspect of a patient's care.
